OPEN LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER OF NEW ZEALAND 2019

OPEN LETTER TO LEADERS OF THE WORLD

As we are bombarded daily with dire warnings about the fate of Mother Earth, I am beginning to realize that for the first time in the history of humans on the planet, we are all facing a life-threatening global crisis that is affecting every single country in all corners of the earth.

We are all connected to our green spaces in the fragile web of life. Each and every organism in this web has a special function, a specialized niche, and a unique role to play. The value and importance of each of each strand may not be obvious until it is destroyed. The extinction of one species can ripple right through the web of life and negatively impact the health and well being of all of us. If too many strands are shredded they may never be repaired.

Bumblebees are master pollinators as they will visit flowers, even when it’s overcast and rainy. Honey bees can detect when it’s going to rain and will stay inside their hives. Also, lots of pollen sticks very easily to their fat and furry bodies. Tomatoes, peppers, and cranberries really benefit from the pollination of bumble bees. Even beef cattle depend on pollinators as cows eat alfalfa!  Alfalfa flowers are pollinated mostly by honey bees.

Since we are all connected by fragile strands in the web of life, the disappearance of a small living organism like a bumble bee will impact bird, bears, badgers, foxes, mice, shrews, and weasels and the biggest impact will be on humans.

When an individual country experiences a harrowing extreme weather event like out -of -control forest fires, life-threatening floods, killer earth quakes, terrifying hurricanes etc. the government will declare a national emergency.  Maybe, each and  every country needs to declare a national emergency until  we solve global overheating and our climate chaos.

A day does not go by, where I do not read with great alarm; about recent research that definitively demonstrates that our days here on Earth are numbered, if we do not take immediate and extreme actions to reduce global overheating and embrace all green renewables and green technologies.

I want my children and my children’s children to embrace a future filled with hope and optimism rather than face a future of dread and fear.
