Good to Know

IN PRAISE OF TREES! 🌲🌳🌴🌱🌲🌳🌴🌱🌲🌳🌴🌱🌲🌳🌴🌱🌲🌳 🌲🌳🌴🌱🌲🌳 I protect, preserve, praise, and plant trees every opportunity I get. Mr. X pointed out to me that planting trees will not change the carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere one little bit. And the only benefit I would reap was to feel good about myself. My response to Mr. X is that I cannot agree with him because then we would BOTH BE WRONG! Even if what he said was indeed true fact,  I also want to make it clear that are many other incredible and much needed benefits of trees! Trees are the longest living, the oldest plants on Earth and serve more uses than any other plant. Let me count the ways … Trees are- the lungs air conditioners rain makers air filters umbrellas soil makers toxic cleaners of soil   fruit baskets nut bowls water sponges   erosion stoppers wood builders paper makers of the Earth. And they provide food, shelter, shade, prot...

IN PRAISE OF TREES (2)  Not only do the trees in our protected green spaces stand guard as protective sentinels against the onslaught of devastating climate- triggered weather phenomena, but they also provide us with incredible health benefits.  Trees planted in urban neighbourhoods absorbs all kinds of nasty, smog –producing pollutants spewing from the tail pipes of city vehicles, like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides, and particulates that are responsible for triggering diseases like asthma, cancer, and heart disease. The smaller the particles of soot, the deeper they can penetrate into the respiratory system and the more hazardous to a person’s health and well being.  Recent research shows that maples, aspens, and poplar trees trap far more pollutants than previously thought.  (National Center of Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado.)  The trees that are champions at improving air quality are ash, maples, elder...

THUMBS UP!  WAY UP!  TO CARBON ENGINEERING COMPANY This company from British Columbia, Canada is trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, storing it, and turning it into liquid synthetic fuel. Steve Oldham, CEO states that the 1 megatonne of carbon dioxide removed annually is equal to planting 50 million trees. 🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲  “If you believe there is a cost to climate change , there is a value of eliminating carbon.” stated Steve. 🌊🌂⛆⛄⛈🌀🌎 They plan to build another plant in Texas in 2023.

CAN YOU CONNECT THE DOTS ON CLEANING PRODUCTS    R esearchers discovered that  one of the reasons that stay-at home fathers and mothers suffered from a higher cancer rate was due to the great variety of very corrosive and toxic cleaning products that they were using inside the house on a daily basis. Many common household cleaning agents contain formaldehyde . Formaldehyde irritates the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and throat .  It is also a highly reactive chemical which combines with protein and can cause allergic contact dermatitis .  The most widely reported symptoms from exposure to high levels of this chemical include irritation of the eyes and headaches .  Until recently, the most serious of the diseases attributed to formaldehyde exposure was asthma. However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently conducted research, which has caused formaldehyde to be strongly suspected of causing a rare type o...

WORTH REPEATING  - COMPOSTING -SOIL- CARBON STORAGE One of the most powerful and effective actions you can take at the individual level is  to throw all green items  your dead leaves from potted  plants to potato peelings into your composting bin. I live in a condo so I have a a stainless steel bucket from the Dollar store sitting on top of my fridge. Luckily, in a condo you can empty it every day. Seeing that I have a small court  yard  in the summer I feed my roses with cut up banana peels, crushed eggs shells in my planters and coffee grounds  only to plants like rhodendrons which are acid loving. Most cities have composting programs and it is very easy to  fill a covered bin with compostable materials. Why is composting such a big deal when it comes to global warming/climate change, you might ask? Here goes... Organic farmers use compost to grow healthy  plants. As the plants  feed on the nutrients in t...

THUMBS UP TO … 👍 DIANE BERESFORD-KROEGER  Did you know that bees     depend on trees such as firs and pines for their survival? Canadian world- renowned medical biochemist, Diane Beresford-Kroeger explains in her compelling book "The Global Forest" that bees do indeed need trees.🌲🌳 She explains that on hot and humid days the worker honeybees will go in search of resin. The honeybee tears the resins from trees and brings it back to the hive. There the resin is mixed with the wax from the beehive.   This mixture is waterproof and has an antibiotic action. The bees use the mixture to seal the hive.   This helps the hive to become airtight, watertight, and protects it from predators.   To keep the hive sanitized the honeybees will entomb any invading insects with the resin.   So when we plant trees, we also help to protect the billions of tiny bees that play an unbelievable important role in the web of life. AND THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FO...
