MESSAGE FROM BRENT ELSEY, MEDICAL DOCTOR, MEMBER OF BARRIE DOCTORS ON CLIMATE SOLUTIONS (DOCS)

  In comparing Covid  to our  present climate crisis, Dr.  Elsey made the following observation. The climate crisis impacts will be more significant, longer in duration, and will have no easy fixes-like a vaccine.

Our communities will experience extreme weather events with infrastructure destruction that will impair health care delivery, worsening food security, increased poverty, special upheaval driven by climate chaos refugees, epidemics from old pathogens like cholera and malaria.

Canadian values and cooperation (I will add within Canada and with our biggest trading partner the US) are very much needed and they have been evident during the Coved crisis

Innovative thinking is encouraged and supported.

 

WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW TO REDUCE GLOBAL OVERHEATING

Ø COMPOST -  20% of all  methane gas in the world comes from compostable materials dumped into landfill sites

Ø PLANT AS MANY TREES AS POSSIBE - ecologically healthy cities need 40% urban canopy, most only have between 20-25%

Ø  STOP EATING BEEF- grazing  is very damaging  to environment,  cows create unwanted  methane gas , and one cow drinks 100 litres of water per day, governments need to subsidize  farmers away  from  beef

Ø DRASTICALLY RDUCE USE OF PLASTIC; ESPECIALLY,  PLASTIC BOTTLES

Ø DONT ORDER PRODUCTS FROM AMAZON –when  you buy locally your neighbours and Mother Earth wins

Ø REDUCE /REUSE – Buy from Thrift Stores

Ø DEMAND BOLD ACTIONS  TO REDUCE GLOBAL OVERHEATING FROM ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNEMNTS

 DON'T  TREAT MOTHER EARTH LIKE A GIGANTIC GARBAGE BIN On Sunday, October 15, the Barrie Garden Club ventured out on a dark, dreary, and drizzly day to pick up litter, along Highway 26 close to Wilson Avenue. As I was picking up all kinds of litter such as license plates, chairs, discarded clothing, plastic bags, lots  of cigarette butts, and a myriad of discarded coffee containers, I began to reflect on all the problems triggered by litter. Here in Canada, we are very lucky to have an organized system where most municipalities and cities  make sure that there are regular pick-ups for your garbage, compost, and recyclables. So it boggles my mind why so many Canadians do not use the readily provided containers, but instead  treat Mother Earth like a gigantic garbage bin. I simply cannot understand when someone buys a cup of coffee, they then go for a long hike, they  manage to carry the cup full of coffee, but the minute it’s empty, they simply cannot manage to carry  it back home a
