YELLOWSTONE PARK AND WOLVES

Over the years hunters completely eradicated all wolves from Yellowstone Park in the US.

In 1995, 14 wolves were introduced back to Yellowstone Park.

No one expected or could predict the dramatic changes that would occur over the coming years. 

The hunting of deer by the wolves resulted in a significant decrease in the number of deer in the park.

Since deer are herbivores in no time all the naturalized areas started to regenerate.

Deciduous trees such as aspen and willow trees started to flourish.

Many of the trees that started to thrive were berry trees.

As the trees started to return so did all kinds of insects.

With readily available food sources insect-eating birds made the park their home.

He beavers previously extinct in the park returned.

The dams they built provided habitats for otters, muskrats, and reptiles.

The wolves killed coyotes and the population of rabbits and mice increased dramatically.

 More mice and rabbits attracted hawks, red foxes, badgers, and weasels.

Even the population of bald eagles and ravens returned.

The presence of the wolves in the park triggered a balance between predator and prey.

 When the eco-system is balanced all kinds of species are provided the opportunity to thrive.

The arrival of the wolves over the years resulted in a visible change in the behavior of the rivers.

The tangled roots of the trees greatly prevented erosion along the riverbanks.

As the river banks were stabilized, the channels narrowed, and more pools were formed.

As a result, the rivers stayed were stabilized in their course.

The wolves significantly transformed for the better the great eco-system of Yellowstone Park, as well as, changing the park’s physical geography.

Maye, just maybe we  humans should not interfere with the  perfect   balance of predator-prey naturally found in the delicate web of life.

 DON'T  TREAT MOTHER EARTH LIKE A GIGANTIC GARBAGE BIN On Sunday, October 15, the Barrie Garden Club ventured out on a dark, dreary, and drizzly day to pick up litter, along Highway 26 close to Wilson Avenue. As I was picking up all kinds of litter such as license plates, chairs, discarded clothing, plastic bags, lots  of cigarette butts, and a myriad of discarded coffee containers, I began to reflect on all the problems triggered by litter. Here in Canada, we are very lucky to have an organized system where most municipalities and cities  make sure that there are regular pick-ups for your garbage, compost, and recyclables. So it boggles my mind why so many Canadians do not use the readily provided containers, but instead  treat Mother Earth like a gigantic garbage bin.
