Every year trees are attacked by billions of insects! 

Scientists tell us that birds eat arPEST CONTROL-COFFEE BORER AND BIRDS

Coffee berry borers are tiny insects that spend their entire life cycle inside coffee beans in Jamaican coffee plantations.                                                                                                               Coffee farmers may lose 20% of their crops due to this infestation.                                                                            Luckily,  the black-throated blue warblers will feast on borers.It has been  calculated the birds’ pest-control value at $125 per acre.

To protect and enhance the food sources and habitats of the warblers the Jamaican forestry officials plan  to plant indigenous shade trees like mahogany and almond trees.

These larvae could potentially destroy countless acres of crops around the world. 

Farmers have discovered if they plant fruit orchards near woodlots, the birds  from the woodlot  will  devour  most  of the insects ready to attack the fruit on the trees!

 DON'T  TREAT MOTHER EARTH LIKE A GIGANTIC GARBAGE BIN On Sunday, October 15, the Barrie Garden Club ventured out on a dark, dreary, and drizzly day to pick up litter, along Highway 26 close to Wilson Avenue. As I was picking up all kinds of litter such as license plates, chairs, discarded clothing, plastic bags, lots  of cigarette butts, and a myriad of discarded coffee containers, I began to reflect on all the problems triggered by litter. Here in Canada, we are very lucky to have an organized system where most municipalities and cities  make sure that there are regular pick-ups for your garbage, compost, and recyclables. So it boggles my mind why so many Canadians do not use the readily provided containers, but instead  treat Mother Earth like a gigantic garbage bin.
