DANGER LURKING IN PLASTIC BOTTLES
DANGER LURKING IN PLASTIC BOTTLES Over a million marine animals die slow agonizing death every single year from ingesting plastic litter which they mistake for food. The biggest problem with plastic items
is that they do not biodegrade. Plastic decomposes incredibly slowly by turning
into smaller and smaller pieces. A
plastic bottle may take between 400 and 1,000 years to decompose! Massive amounts of plastic waste are harming
the physical world including rivers, lakes, wetlands, forests, field, and the oceans -
habitats for wildlife. Much to the alarm of Marine biologists they
removed large plastic sheeting, flower
pots, plastic ropes, plastic canvas, lots plastic and grocery bags
banana sacks, and fishing nets from the stomach of whales. In one whale, a young Cuvier's beaked
whale, scientists found 88 pounds of plastic! In 2020, WHO will be beginning a
review of the potential risks of plastic in drinking water after independent studies
revealed that more than 90% of water in plastic bottles contained
plastic particles. In the 2019 a study from State
University of New York in Fredonia analysed 259 bottles from 19 locations in
9 countries across 11 different brands. Of the 259 bottles studies only
17 were free of plastic. Nestlé’s Pure Life had an astounding
10, 000 plastic particles in one litre of water! H-m-m-m maybe the word “Pure” is
misleading! To add insult to injury Nestle is one
of the top three powerful companies responsible for the alarming rise of
plastic litter in our rivers and oceans. The bottles analyzed were bought
in US, China, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Lebanon, Kenya, and Thailand. A second study, commissioned by the
Story of Stuff also found that plastic in plastic water bottles was widespread. The
coordinator of Story of Stuff, Stiv Wilson pointed out that people are paying premium
prices for products with plastic particles. By drinking expensive bottled
water you are adding microscopic plastic particles to your body, a foreign substance, your body
has never encountered – will these microscopic plastic pieces
lead to an alarming epidemic of untreatable cancers? In 2109 in
Indonesia the government partnered with the army, with plastic experts, environmental organizations, businesses, and
the public to create a model for other counties
to follow. Their ambitious goal is to reduce plastic by 70% by the
year 2025. Kudos to Indonesia! Can we not all learn from Indonesia? I am urging we all boycott the three top
polluters of plastic litter in our oceans and rivers - Coca Cola, Pepsi and
Nestle until they replace their plastic containers with non-plastic, help pay
for the clean-up of our precious oceans, and make drinks that are healthful
not harmful to human health. What can your organization do to help start a
boycott along with the shaming?
