WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY MAY 14, 2022

WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY MAY 14,  2022

On the second weekend each May, people around the world celebrate World Migratory Bird Day by organizing public events such as bird festivals, education programs and bird-watching excursions.

Light Pollution will be the focus of the World Migratory Bird Day 2022 campaign.
Artificial light is increasing globally by at least 2 per cent per year and it is known to adversely affect many bird species.
Light pollution is a significant threat to migratory birds, causing disorientation when they fly at night, leading to collisions with buildings, perturbing their internal clocks, or interfering with their ability to undertake long-distance migrations.

Four hundred and fifty species of birds live in Canada.

Most go south, a large number spending winter in the USA or Mexico, but some species go as far as the southern tip of South America, a 30,000 km round trip!

The ruby -throated hummingbird flies 22 hours for 800 km non-stop, all by itself, from Canada to Central America   over the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico!

In 1916, Canada and the US signed an agreement to protect their shared species of birds.

In 1917, Canada passed a law to protect most birds.

The Migratory Bird Convention Act (MCBA) makes it It is illegal to harm, collect, or harass most adult bird species, their nests and eggs.

Birds of prey (hawks and owls) are not protected by this Act they are protected by provincial laws.
